Strong 2nd half delivers increase for IQE plc - 25 January 2010
IQE plc experienced a strong second half recovery following the industry-wide destocking that adversely impacted the first six months of 2009. There are strong indications that the problem of skills shortages in the electronics sector will continue unless more young people are encouraged to choose STEM subjects in further education and choose a career in electronics. The 2007 Labour Force Survey reported that 37% of the UK electronics sector’s workforce is aged 45 to 64 compared with 22.3% for the total UK workforce while only 7% of the UK electronics sector’s workforce is aged 16 to 24 compared with 14.1% for the total UK workforce.
