High Volume Sector
This sector is largely dominated by inward investment and has traditionally focussed on high-volume manufacture. But times change! Wales can no longer claim to play host to large manufacturers, with a sizeable but low-skilled work force. Like the phoenix, the sector is re-inventing itself. Some of the familiar household names associated with high-volume manufacture remain but with very different characteristics. With an increasingly skilled workforce, they are driving the development of mature technology very hard to move to the top of its value chain. Their consumer base is within Europe and very broad but there are notable exceptions. Products have a short lifecycle but are based on relatively slowly changing technology.
