Cream of the Crop for Top 50 SME
Undeterred by an increasingly complex technology industry, 26-year-old software engineer Mike Nash from Llanelli, has set his sights firmly on rebuilding a lucrative career in Wales’ buoyant electronics sector. Joining cash management systems provider, Tellermate – voted one of the UK’s Top 50 SMEs to work for - Mike returned to Wales after facing redundancy at CRM software provider, AIT in Henley-on-Thames.
Now, eighteen months later, Mike who travels 60 miles from his home in Llanelli to Tellermate’s Cardiff-based headquarters, has already developed his role from PC platform software to embedded-software engineering. Responsible for the maintenance of TellerComK - a product that eliminates the need for manual data entry by sending cash management data directly to back office systems – Mike has always vowed to return to his Welsh roots after leaving in 1996 to study Computer Science at Bath University. "On returning to Wales in 2002, I found the embedded software engineering sector far more prominent than in England. Originally employed as a PC software engineer at AIT where I worked on CRM software for a leading UK Building Society. I moved to Tellermate where my key responsibilities include software development for both PC and embedded systems. I am also involved with departmental recruitment and assist by interviewing potential new recruits." Commenting on his new role, Dr Chris Young, Chief Executive of the Welsh Electronics Forum said: "Mike is an excellent example of a highly-skilled technology professional that’s made the successful transition from one position to another.
"Although the number of vacancies for technicians, operators and professional engineers and good salary levels on offer are encouraging, candidates should be looking at building a successful portfolio career in order to keep pace with the fast moving technology industry. "Tellermate has an excellent track record as one of the most prominent companies within the electronics sector and its recent recognition as one of the top 50 SMEs to work for reaffirms its exceptional levels of staff commitment." Mike, whose passion for electronics is unstoppable, says making the move to Tellermate has been fantastic. "With over 400 customers and processing more than £1bn daily, it’s vital that our systems remain accurate and user-friendly. This drive for excellence is fantastic and I really enjoy seeing projects through from start to finish." Looking to the future, Mike is confident that the technology industry will continue to improve and re-invent itself to take advantage of new opportunities.
The Welsh technology industry has a very balanced approach to Research and Development, preferring to take things a little slower. I think this is great, because it means that we do not leap ahead and invest in costly new technology without thinking it through carefully. "There are a lot of opportunities out there and I think through careful planning, both highly-skilled job-seekers and the industry as a whole will be able to take advantage of these over the next few years." Mike whose hobbies include radio controlled cars, recently set up a mini lab at home where he is working on projects to expand his knowledge of electronics.
