Introduction

The Welsh technology industry employs more than 30,000 people (source: Cambridge Econometrics, 2003) in research, design, development and manufacturing. This is approximately 3.5% of the private sector workforce in Wales. The technology industry in Wales has a combined turnover in excess of £3.2b (source: Welsh Electronics Forum, 2002) and has attracted more than £2.8b investment since 1994 (source: WDA, 2003).

The technology industry, as defined by the Welsh Electronics Forum, comprises companies which ...

... design and/or manufacture products with a high electronics or software content or application. The Forum also acknowledges the contribution made by companies which support their supply chain.

It is very diverse. Generally, the technology industry can be considered as having four main sectors:

  • software
  • semiconductors
  • high-volume manufacture
  • electronics

There are more than 300 medium and large companies according to this definition. However, including the large number of micro businesses that could be classed as technology companies, the total figure may be as great as 3,000. Details about many of these companies can be found in the Company Directory. Company products and technologies can be categorised as:

  • consumer equipment
  • instrumentation and control
  • components
  • systems
  • software
  • semiconductors
  • contract manufacture

Fuller definitions of these categories are given in the Company Directory.
