The Welsh technology industry employs more than 30,000 people (source: Cambridge Econometrics, 2003) in research, design, development and manufacturing. This is approximately 3.5% of the private sector workforce in Wales. The technology industry in Wales has a combined turnover in excess of £3.2b (source: Welsh Electronics Forum, 2002) and has attracted more than £2.8b investment since 1994 (source: WDA, 2003). There are more than 300 medium and large companies according to this definition. However, including the large number of micro businesses that could be classed as technology companies, the total figure may be as great as 3,000.
